Mobileye, its Russian distributor INCO, and Russian insurer VSK have together launched a strategic collaboration aimed at increasing road safety while lowering costs for insurance companies, cost reductions which can then be passed on to consumers. These lower costs will, in turn, give insurers a distinct edge in a highly competitive market.

Mobileye produces collision avoidance systems, marketed in Russia by INCO. This system contains a number of features aimed at reducing collisions including:

• Headway Monitoring and Warning, which helps drivers maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead by sounding an alert when the distance becomes too small


• Forward Collision Warning which helps prevent accidents by warning drivers of a possible collision in time for them to take preventative action


• Lane Departure Warning which warns drivers when they have left their lane without signaling


• Pedestrian and Cyclist Warning which protects vulnerable road users by warning drivers when they are in danger of colliding with pedestrians or cyclists

Mobileye systems have been adopted by several fleets and have been credited with reducing the number of collisions experienced by those fleets.

And now insurance carriers are starting to take notice. In the context of the Mobileye-VSK-INCO program, designed to increase adoption of collision avoidance systems, INCO will provide collision avoidance systems at a discount for participants, while VSK will cut participants’ premiums by 25%, a discount that will then increase for drivers who improve their driving behavior.

Past experience has shown that collision avoidance systems not only directly prevent collisions but can also indirectly prevent collisions by improving driver behavior. Results from this program will be analyzed to better understand how insurance companies can benefit from collision avoidance systems.

This agreement comes on the heels of the decision by Italy’s SARA Assicurazioni and Automobile Club Italia to give discounts on insurance premiums to drivers who install Mobileye’s collision avoidance system, and follows programs set up by Munich Reinsurance America and AIG.

In fact, according to Accenture’s 2017 Technology Vision Report agreements like this may well become standard over the next few years.
