And to answer, they brought in our Chief Technology Officer, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Fnews\u002Fmobileye-cto-wins-prestigious-michael-bruno-award\u002F\">Prof. Shai Shalev-Shwartz\u003C\u002Fa>, who spoke on a panel together with former Florida state senator Jeff Brandes, moderated by \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Finterview\u002Fautonocast-prof-amnon-shashua-taxonomy\u002F\">\u003Cem>Autonocast\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa> co-host Alex Roy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>&ldquo;By now there is evidence that self-driving is possible,&rdquo; said Prof. Shalev-Shwartz. &ldquo;We see self-driving cars in the streets of San Francisco and Austin. So I think that we are beyond this obstacle. The problems are different.&rdquo;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Those problems are the same that Shalev-Shwartz and his colleagues \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Farxiv.org\u002Fabs\u002F1708.06374\">laid out in a research paper six years ago\u003C\u002Fa>, namely: safety and scalability.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cimg src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fstatic.mobileye.com\u002Fwebsite\u002Fus\u002Fcorporate\u002Fimages\u002Ff844b86f4334aff4258d9ddaf01125d6_1687181105168.jpg\" alt=\"EcoMotion 2023 featured a panel discussion between Prof. Shai Shalev-Shwartz, Jeff Brandes, and Alex Roy.\" width=\"1650\" height=\"777\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>To tackle the former, Mobileye formulated the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Fblog\u002Fresponsibility-sensitive-safety-unwritten-rules-of-the-road\u002F\">Responsibility-Sensitive Safety&trade;\u003C\u002Fa> model (RSS&trade;). As Shalev-Shwartz put it: &ldquo;There is no way to guarantee absolute safety. So the question is, if we cannot guarantee absolute safety, what can we guarantee? And how can we have a language that enables us to talk about exactly what is &lsquo;safe&rsquo; and what is &lsquo;not safe&rsquo;?&rdquo; That&rsquo;s what RSS seeks to define, he noted. &ldquo;If everybody would act according to RSS, then there would be no accidents at all.&rdquo;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The key to scalability and economic viability, according to Shalev-Shwartz, is to take a long view towards the autonomous future, maintain the profitability needed to stay the course, and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Fblog\u002Fhands-off-eyes-off-taxonomy-for-automated-driving\u002F\">clearly and honestly communicate the technology&rsquo;s capabilities\u003C\u002Fa> along the way. &ldquo;We view AVs as a marathon and not a short sprint. We have a solid ADAS business, we are profitable all the time. We're developing autonomous vehicles and we are profitable all the time. We prepare our autonomous vehicles for such conditions by equipping them with a full array of sensor types so that they&rsquo;ll be able to detect and handle whatever weather they encounter. The sensor inputs allow an AV to determine, for example, whether it should reduce speed and proceed with greater caution due to weather conditions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Importantly, our AV featured in the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Fblog\u002Frobotaxi-night-drive-jerusalem-unedited-video\u002F\">night-drive video in Jerusalem\u003C\u002Fa> incorporates a radar\u002Flidar subsystem (in addition to a camera-based subsystem). We call this approach to sensing \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Ftechnology\u002Ftrue-redundancy\u002F\">True Redundancy&trade;\u003C\u002Fa>, which specifically provides for incorporation of both subsystems operating independently of one another. By now we see cars everywhere, but they weren&rsquo;t mass-produced until Henry Ford came up with the assembly line. These days almost all cars come with some degree of advanced driver-assistance system, and most such systems are based on cameras... but that too wasn&rsquo;t the case until Mobileye pioneered the concept. And that camera-first approach remains at the heart of everything we do.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>Historical Vision\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>When Mobileye began nearly a quarter-century ago, driver-assistance technology was still in its infancy (and autonomous driving, by extension, was little more than a pipe dream). Some automakers were starting to introduce basic ADAS features, but the industry had yet to settle on what type of sensors to use for them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cimg src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fstatic.mobileye.com\u002Fwebsite\u002Fus\u002Fcorporate\u002Fimages\u002F3a4d7c7e97f877e6d44c955b38e2dbec_1680467160654.jpg\" alt=\"Mobileye CEO &amp; founder Professor Amnon Shashua pioneered computer vision technology for advanced driver-assistance systems.\" width=\"1650\" height=\"789\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>One major manufacturer was working on a camera system for measuring the distance to the vehicle ahead, and invited a computer science professor named \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Famnon-shashua\u002F\">Amnon Shashua\u003C\u002Fa> to provide his input. Shashua showed that he could do with just one camera what they were trying to do with two. That successful demonstration led to his founding Mobileye and paved the way for advanced driver-assistance systems that could (and indeed would) be deployed at a scale great enough to revolutionize automotive safety.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The reason why that automaker called upon Shashua was due to the expertise for which he was already becoming known in the emerging field of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.intel.com\u002Fcontent\u002Fwww\u002Fus\u002Fen\u002Finternet-of-things\u002Fcomputer-vision\u002Foverview.html\">computer vision\u003C\u002Fa>. This form of artificial intelligence employs highly sophisticated algorithms to interpret the inputs from simple cameras in order to understand their surroundings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>To this day, that same core competence \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Fblog\u002Fcomputer-vision-eccv-2022\u002F\">still drives us here at Mobileye\u003C\u002Fa>, where teams of engineers and developers are constantly \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Fblog\u002Fenhanced-computer-vision-driver-assistance\u002F\">honing our computer vision algorithms\u003C\u002Fa> to better identify a wider range of parameters in the driving environment, and developing \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Ftechnology\u002Feyeq-chip\u002F\">the chips to put that technology into cars and out on the road\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>So why do we still embrace a camera-first approach above all other types of sensors? We feel how the car interacts with the road, hear other cars coming and horns honking, and can even smell if something has gone wrong (like an engine overheating). But no sense is as essential to us as sight, and cameras are the sensors that function most like the human eye.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Cameras can &ldquo;see&rdquo; the parameters of the road surface and the various obstacles, hazards, and other users on and around us &ndash; including other cars, trucks, bikes, and pedestrians. Cameras also provide rich semantic understanding of key details in the driving environment &ndash; such as identifying lane markings, recognizing colors on traffic lights, and even reading the text on two-dimensional traffic signs.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>For their part, radar and lidar deliver certain key advantages over cameras, such as detecting objects beyond line of sight and in lower-lighting or bad weather conditions. Lidars, for example, are expensive, but cameras are relatively affordable. Building our technology around low-cost cameras affords us the rare simultaneous opportunity to increase both the availability and the performance of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobileye.com\u002Fsolutions\u002F\">our solutions\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>For the mass market, the low cost of camera sensors enables integration of our driver-assistance technology into more vehicles (without disproportionately affecting their purchase prices). Indeed, to date, more than 135 million vehicles have been equipped with our technologies, and that number is growing at a quickening pace.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>For higher-end vehicles, the low cost of camera sensors means that more of them can be cost-effectively integrated into advanced solutions.
